Moringa and Thyroid

Hyperthyroidism, the condition caused by the overproduction of the main thyroid hormone, thyroxine, is extremely dangerous and can, in some cases, be life-threatening.

There are many reasons for one to develop the condition. The growth of nodules around the thyroid gland, autoimmune diseases such as thyroiditis and genetic inheritance can all cause hyperthyroidism. Over consumption of iodine rich foods can also lead to a thyroxine overload.

As thyroxine is the hormone behind the regulation of metabolism, even the slightest change in its concentration can wreak havoc in and on your body.

Fortunately, the Moringa plant is so rich in all right nutrients that it has been known to be a great help when it comes to hyperthyroidism.

 How Does It Help?

  • It regulates the production of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. It promotes good metabolism, reduces nervousness and excessive sweating
  • It stabilizes the rapid and irregular heartbeat caused by hyperthyroidism
  • It also prevents damage to bones that might be a result of extra thyroxine in the body

In addition to this, the Moringa tree is also a great source of many other forms of nutrition.

It is rich in Vitamins A, B, B1, B3, and C. It improves the body’s ability to convert fat into energy and improves immunity. It also is as rich in protein as an egg and as rich in calcium as milk, if not more. This helps to maintain bone density that might be lost because of over-saturation of thyroxine in the body. Since it is also rich in iron, it improves the production of blood.

Moringa regulates thyroid function

Moringa seems to be having a regulatory action on the thyroid gland. For example, people with Grave’s disease or overactive thyroid find significant improvement in their symptoms on regular use of Moringa supplements. Inflammatory conditions of the thyroid such as Hashimoto’s disease could be resolved without medication if Moringa is consumed regularly.

While drugs and radiation therapy is the common treatment for severe cases, a compound called quercetin is also highly effective in regulating the thyroid gland function. Moringa oleifera, the tropical plant contains quercetin in significant quantity and research has proved that it is effective in regulation thyroid hormone in the body. Apart from stabilizing the T3 and T4 hormones, moringa is beneficial in boosting the energy levels of patients suffering from hypothyroidism, which is characterized by low energy levels.
